FRACTIONS
Topics:
1. Mixed numbers
2. Add/Subtract Fractions
3. Multiply/Divide Fractions
1. Mixed Numbers
A mixed number is a number with a whole number and a fraction combined. Ex: 6 and 3/4
Writing Mixed Numbers as Improper Fractions
Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add that number to the numerator, and write this sum over the denominator.
Step 1: 6 x 4 = 24
Step 2: + 3
So, 6 3/4=27/4
2-Adding/Subtracting Fractions
To add or subtract fractions with common denominators, simply add or subtract the numerators and
keep the same denominator.
* Sometimes fractions have an uncommon denominator. In order to add or subtract them, you must find a common denominator.
Ex: 1/2 + 1/3 6 is a common denominator so we multipy 1/2 by 3 (top and Bottom) and 1/3 by 2 (top and bottom)
so we have 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6
11 *Remember, what you multiply the denominator by to get to 6, you must multiple the numerator by the same number. You subtract the same way.
3-Multiplying/Dividing Fractions
To multiply fractions:
1. Multiply the numerators together to make a new numerator.
(straight across the top)
2. Multiply the denominators together to make a new denominator.
(straight across the bottom)
3. Simplify if necessary.
Ex: 1/2 x 2/3 step 1 (1 x 2)/ (2x 3) Step 2 (2/6) simplifies to 1/3 by dividing top and bottom by 2.
To divide fractions: KFC*Dividing fractions is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.
reciprocal – numbers whose numerators and denominators have been switched.
1. Keep the first fraction. (Keep It)
2. Find the reciprocal of the second fraction. (flip it)
3. Multiply as usual.(change it)
Ex: 1/2 divided by 2/3
Keep 1/2
Flip 2/3 to get 3/2
Change it to multiply and solve
